Biography

Tom Cunningham completed his graduate training in the Department of Psychology and the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa under the supervision of Alan Kim Johnson. He underwent postdoctoral training at McGill University and the University of Ottawa with Leo Renaud, M.D., Ph.D., and subsequently worked with Francois Abboud, M.D., at the University of Iowa. As a Block Director for the Neuroscience block, he guided medical students at the University of Missouri for seven years. In 2006, he joined UT Health San Antonio as a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and later served as chair of the Committee for Graduate Studies. In 2009, he moved to the UNT Health Science Center as a Professor of Integrative Physiology and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center. Before his tenure at Texas A&M University, he held the position of Associate Vice President of Research Administration at the UNT Health Science Center. Dr. Cunningham teaches neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, endocrinology, pharmacology, and anesthetics. His research focuses on the central nervous system's role in maintaining blood pressure and fluid balance and has received continuous NIH funding since 1995. He actively reviews grants for the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health.
