Professor Litster, a native of Toronto, graduated from McMaster University and joined the MIT faculty in 1966 as an Assistant Professor of Physics. He earned his PhD from MIT in 1965 and became an Associate Professor in 1971 and a full Professor in 1975. From 1988 to 1991, he served as the director of the MIT Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory. Prior to that, he directed the MIT Center for Materials Science and Engineering for five years. Between 1979 and 1983, he headed the Division of Condensed Matter and Atomic Plasma Physics in the MIT Department of Physics. Professor Litster also held significant administrative roles, including Vice President and Dean of Research from 1991 to 2001 and Dean of Graduate Education from 1996 to 1999. He participated in the Executive Committee of the American Physics Society’s Division of Condensed Matter Physics and chaired it during the 1998-1999 term. In addition, he was a member of the National Research Council’s Solid State Sciences Committee from 1986 to 1995, where he served as Chair from 1991 to 1993. He was a regional editor for Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals from 1986 to 1993 and is a fellow of several prestigious societies. He received an honorary doctorate from McMaster University in 1992 and was awarded the Irving Langmuir Prize in Chemical Physics by the American Physical Society in 1993.
