Dr. J a Hoogeveen

Biography

Han Hoogeveen is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in Algorithms, Simulation, and Complex Systems. He obtained his PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology for his research on Single Machine Bicriteria Scheduling problems, under the guidance of Jan Karel Lenstra at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam. Hoogeveen has conducted postdoctoral research at both Eindhoven University of Technology and Princeton University before returning to Eindhoven for further research. He has developed breakthrough algorithms related to on-line algorithms and competitive ratios, applying his work to real-world scheduling problems. Currently, he leads a small Operations Research group at Utrecht University, which is part of the AI Mobility Lab, focusing on practical planning problems in collaboration with major companies. Notable projects include optimizing gate assignments at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and planning bus schedules for Qbuzz, a significant public transport provider in the Netherlands. His ongoing research initiatives also include partnerships with Dutch Railways (NS) and KLM to enhance service planning and schedule optimization for personnel, considering human factors. With a commitment to applied research, Hoogeveen seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical applications in real-life contexts.
