Biography

J Vernon Henderson is the Eastman Professor Emeritus of Political Economy and a Professor in the Department of Economics and Urban Studies at Brown University. He is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Henderson obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and holds a B.A. from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on urbanization, local government finance, and regulation across the USA and various international contexts including Brazil, Canada, India, China, Korea, and Indonesia. His interests encompass systems of cities, industrial location, urban productivity, environmental regulation, and urban sub-center development. Additionally, he contributes to editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of Urban Economics and the Journal of Economic Growth. Henderson has been involved in numerous funded research projects by agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the World Bank, exploring topics from urban development to the effects of zoning and air quality regulations. He has authored a myriad of influential publications in urban economics and development, highlighting the complexities of city systems and their economic implications.
