Dr. J J Penna

Biography

J.J. Penna is a lecturer in Voice and Opera at the Yale School of Music, where he has been a part of the faculty since 2021. His professional life is rooted in the intersection of music and narrative, with an emphasis on the importance of communication in singing. He believes that singers are natural communicators with an intrinsic ability to interpret and dramatize text. In both studio and classroom settings, Penna is dedicated to helping young artists engage profoundly with the sounds and structures of language, giving new life to song. He encourages his students to think creatively while exploring repertoire, respecting the traditions of musical notation while uncovering their expressive impulses. Over his career, Penna has performed extensively with a variety of eminent singers and has held fellowships at prestigious institutions, including the Tanglewood Music Center and the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program. He has a deep commitment to teaching classical song literature and has contributed to numerous esteemed music festivals and conservatories, including the Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory.
