Dr. Jaap Van Dieen

Biography

Jaap van Dieen is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Department of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, specializing in Biomechanics. His research focuses on the effects of aging and musculoskeletal neurological disorders on human movement, with a particular emphasis on stability, posture, and gait. His goal is to contribute to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal movement disorders while increasing understanding of the movement-related causes and consequences of disorders associated with impairments. Van Dieen employs observational and experimental approaches to unravel the interplay of organismic, task-related, and environmental constraints that co-determine motor behavior. He leads an established research group that collaborates with national and international partners from a broad range of expertise and skills to tackle problems from a multidisciplinary perspective. He aims to translate fundamental insights into clinically applicable procedures and to develop measurement tools used in laboratory contexts. He collaborates with applied researchers, epidemiologists, and the biomedical industry, emphasizing the importance of translating research results into practical applications.
