Biography

Jacob M. van Laar is a Professor in the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at UMC Utrecht, Netherlands. He obtained his MD and PhD degrees from Leiden University, specializing in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Leiden University Medical Center. From 1997 to 2007, he worked in the Department of Rheumatology as a clinical academic in various roles, with an interruption for postdoctoral research fellowship at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases in Bethesda, USA. Between 2007 and 2013, he held the Chair in Clinical Rheumatology at Newcastle University, while also serving as an honorary consultant rheumatologist at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, UK. Since November 1, 2013, he has been a working Professor in Rheumatology at UMC Utrecht. His main research interests focus on the clinical pathogenetic aspects of systemic sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, with the aim of improving patient outcomes in rheumatic diseases through innovative clinical-translational research.
