Biography

Jaap Verheul is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in cultural history and transatlantic relations. He previously held an honorary professorship at Radboud University Nijmegen, where he taught courses on transatlantic and transnational cultural history. A Fulbright scholar, he has taught at several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania and UCLA. Verheul has published extensively on topics relating to American and Dutch transatlantic cultural history, including works such as 'Dreams Paradise, Visions Apocalypse: Utopia Dystopia American Culture' (2004), 'American Multiculturalism 9/11: Transatlantic Perspectives' (2009), and 'Discovering Dutch: Culture Society Netherlands' (2010). His latest book, 'De Atlantische Pelgrim: John Lothrop Motley en de Amerikaanse ontdekking van Nederland' (The Atlantic Pilgrim: John Lothrop Motley and the American Discovery of the Netherlands), was published in 2017. His current research interests focus on American perceptions of Europe and digital humanities, where he coordinates the digital humanities research project Translantis. He has also engaged in numerous collaborative projects and was the project leader for various HERA-funded initiatives, exploring critical heritage studies and future Europe.
