Dr. Jacco Vink

Biography

Jacco Vink is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in high-energy astrophysics. He obtained his PhD from Utrecht University in 1999 and has worked with the Institute Potsdam and as a NASA Chandra fellow at Columbia University in New York. In 2005, he held a brief position at SRON Utrecht before becoming a faculty member at Utrecht University. In 2012, he joined the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and became part of the GRAPPA excellence center focused on astroparticle physics. Vink is a recipient of the NWO Vidi grant and is involved with the ESA Astronomical Working Group, currently serving on the ESA Science Study Team for the candidate satellite mission XIPE. His main research areas include the study of supernova remnants, neutron stars, active galactic nuclei (AGN), and galaxy clusters, with a particular focus on cosmic-ray acceleration. Vink conducts observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio and optical to X-rays and gamma-rays, and is a member of the H.E.S.S. Collaboration overseeing operations at the H.E.S.S. gamma-ray observatory. He teaches courses on cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, compact stars, and astroparticle physics.
