Dr. Jack Knight

Biography

Jack Knight is the Frederic Cleaveland Distinguished Professor at Duke University, holding appointments in both the Duke Law School and Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. His research expertise lies in modern social and political theory, legal theory, and political economy. As a renowned political scientist and legal theorist, he teaches courses focused on social scientific approaches to law and courts, as well as political economy and social institutions. Knight is also a co-director of the Duke Law Center for Judicial Studies. His scholarly work investigates the rules and norms that organize human activities across nations, including the motivations and decisions of judges, and he has extensively studied the precedents set by U.S. Supreme Court rulings. With numerous publications to his name, he has authored several influential books and articles on topics such as democratic theory and judicial decision-making. Before joining Duke Law in 2008, Knight served as the Sidney W. Souers Professor of Government at Washington University in St. Louis and has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions including the International Center for Business and Politics and the Russell Sage Foundation. He earned his JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and both his MA and PhD in political science from the University of Chicago.
