Biography

Jack Saunders is a Lecturer in Modern British History at University College London (UCL). His research focuses on labor history, particularly the power and agency within the post-war British workplace. He has engaged with shop floor trade union activism within the notoriously fractious British motor industry and the women's organizing efforts within the National Health Service (NHS). His studies explore themes of de-industrialization, the rise of emotional labor, and popular political culture in the latter half of the 20th century. Jack completed his PhD at UCL in 2015, during which he worked on a Wellcome Trust funded project examining the cultural history of the NHS. After his PhD, he was associated with the University of Warwick from 2016 to 2019. In 2019, he taught a course on history, citizenship, and migration in 20th Century Britain at King's College London. His major publications include works on NHS worker identity, the impact of de-industrialization, and class reformation in Britain. He has taught various modules on British history, ranging from survey courses to thematic research seminars.
