Jackie Goordial is an environmental microbiologist whose research investigates the communities of microorganisms interacting to maintain diversity and mediate biogeochemical cycling in the environment. She focuses particularly on extreme environments that are undergoing rapid change, such as permafrost soils. Her research employs a combination of genomic sequencing, culturing, and measurements of microbial metabolic activity and viability, both in situ and in the laboratory. With more than 1% of known microorganisms cultivated in a lab setting and many known solely through molecular analyses, her approach results in a more holistic understanding of environmental microbiology than genomic analyses alone. She is currently exploring the fate of ancient carbon caused by permafrost coastal erosion in marine environments, microbial life at cold-arid limits of dry permafrost in Antarctica, and the potential presence of a novel SARS-CoV-2 virus in sewage-impacted waterways of urban megacities.
