Biography

Jacko van Ast is a senior researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in the Department of Public Administration. He focuses on the institutional and legal aspects of international water management, working within multidisciplinary teams to address complex processes of institutional change. He graduated in Dutch law from Erasmus University in 1986, with a triple specialization in civil law, business law, and environmental regulation. His master's thesis, which investigated the enforcement of environmental policy, led to an internship with the Environmental Federation of South-Holland. Since 1987, van Ast has been a member of the staff at the Erasmus Study Centre for Environmental Science. His teaching includes courses on social environmental science and environmental policy, while his research primarily involves international water management and policy aspects of water flood management. He has led projects concerning water law in South Africa and Poland, as well as Dutch-French-German water regulations. Van Ast also coordinates the environmental infrastructure specialization for the Master's in Urban Development and is involved with the education program for the pre-master year in Public Administration. Moreover, he teaches courses in Public Administration and has offered courses at various national and international universities.
