Jacob Caines is a conductor, musicologist, and performer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a faculty member at Dalhousie University's Fountain School of Performing Arts, where he conducts the Dalhousie Wind Ensemble and teaches musicianship theory. His doctoral research at Concordia University, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), focuses on Urban Scenographies and Queer Geography, particularly exploring the role Queer phenomenology plays in the structures and hierarchies within music institutions and cities. As a research fellow with PULSE Montreal, his work investigates lost and emerging Queer neighborhoods and their significance in archiving and memorializing Queer spaces. Jacob is also an active writer and speaker, participating in conferences and publishing work across Canada and internationally. He founded ClassicalQueer.com, a project aimed at interviewing Queer+ performers and creating a Canadian Database of Queer+ Classical Musicians. As a founding member and clarinetist of ALKALI Collective, Jacob engages with works by living Canadian Queer BIPOC composers. He has been involved in adjudicating and teaching for various music competitions and festivals across Canada.
