Biography

Jacob P. Chestnut is a senior lecturer at the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration, having joined the faculty in July 2018. He earned his Ph.D. in Technology Operations Management from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. Chestnut also holds a Bachelor of Arts (valedictorian) and a Master of Arts (summa cum laude) in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. His research broadly falls under the umbrella of socially sustainable operations. His work is informed by firm observations on social sustainability as an opportunity to innovate for better outcomes. He addresses how firms can adopt a focus on social impact that improves profits and decreases costs, thus creating mutually beneficial situations for various stakeholders. This approach involves solving problems through diverse methodologies such as mechanism design, stochastic dominance, experimental design, and empirical estimation. He investigates issues related to social sustainability in agricultural value chains, particularly in coffee value chains. His research supports the course he teaches, Business of Coffee: From Farm to Cup. Chestnut's work has been recognized with support from the National Science Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and he has been a finalist for a paper competition at the College of Healthcare Operations Management.
