Jacob Doherty specializes in urban environmental anthropology, focusing on African cities and the intertwined issues of economic inequality and environmental justice. His ethnographic research includes work in Uganda, Ivory Coast, and the United States, examining the everyday infrastructures urban residents use to provide for their lives, particularly in relation to waste and mobility. Currently, he is investigating Everyday Mobilities in African Informal Transport Systems, particularly in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where informal transport options like motorcycle taxis and minibuses create differential opportunities for social mobility and reproduce social inequalities. His book, 'Waste Worlds: Inhabiting Kampala's Infrastructures of Disposability', published by University of California Press in 2021, explores the diverse waste streams and social worlds surrounding the capital city of Uganda. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from Stanford University (2016), an MA in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research (2009), and a BA in Globalization Studies from the University of Mary Washington (2006).
