Biography

Jacob N. Shapiro is the John Foster Dulles Professor of International Affairs at Princeton University, specializing in the fields of International Relations, conflict, economic development, security, and technology. He co-founded the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project, a multi-university consortium focused on the empirical study of politically motivated violence. Shapiro leads Princeton’s Accelerator Initiative, which partners with organizations across four continents to build infrastructure for scientific research in challenging information environments. His extensive research includes over 50 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, along with more than 100 policy articles and reports. He is the author of 'The Terrorist’s Dilemma: Managing Violent Covert Organizations' and co-author of 'Small Wars, Big Data: The Information Revolution in Modern Conflict'. Shapiro has conducted field research and policy evaluations in Afghanistan, Colombia, India, and Pakistan. In recognition of his contributions to the study of international relations, he received the 2016 Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association, an honor awarded to scholars under 40 who have made significant academic contributions within ten years of earning their Ph.D. Shapiro is also a veteran of the United States Navy.
