Professor Dr. Jacobus Boomsma

Biography

Jacobus J. Boomsma is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen. His research centers on social evolution, particularly the interactions and conflicts within social insects. Boomsma uses a combination of fieldwork and molecular methods to explore evolutionary transitions and adaptive designs, shedding light on fundamental questions regarding the origins of organizational complexity in nature. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in various regions globally, including Denmark, Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, particularly focusing on fungus-growing ants. His impressive academic career includes mentoring over 23 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have secured tenured positions across the globe. He has received significant funding from prestigious organizations such as the Danish Natural Science Research Council and the European Commission, showcasing his prominence in both the academic and research community. In addition to his research contributions, Boomsma has held numerous leadership roles in various scientific committees and has been recognized with multiple awards for his significant contributions to the field of evolutionary biology.
