Biography

Jácome Armas is an Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam. His research primarily focuses on string theory, quantum gravity, black holes, holography, hydrodynamics, soft/active matter, and astrophysics. He works with postdocs, PhD students, and master's students to explore various aspects of theoretical physics, particularly new black hole geometries and their connections to brane dynamics and fluid dynamics. Armas also contributes to the Dutch Institute for Emergent Phenomena, engaging in interdisciplinary research that bridges physics with computer science, chemistry, and mathematics. He teaches interdisciplinary courses on Emergence and String Theory II at the master's level. Armas has a broad academic background, holding a licenciatura in Engineering Physics from the University of Aveiro, a master's in Advanced Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the Niels Bohr Institute. His career includes postdoctoral positions at the University of Bern and Université Libre de Bruxelles and involvement in science communication through initiatives like Science Cocktails. Armas' work seeks to understand the emergence of cooperative behavior in various contexts and the implications of such phenomena in the study of many-body systems and quantum matter.
