Biography

Jacqueline Avila is a musicologist specializing in film music studies, sound studies, and the intersections of identity, tradition, and modernity in musical cultures. Her work primarily focuses on the Latinx community in the United States, as well as the cultural landscapes of Mexico and Latin America. She is the author of 'Cinesonidos: Film Music and National Identity in Mexico’s Época de Oro,' published in 2019 by Oxford University Press as part of the Music Media Series. Dr. Avila's current research interests include transnationalism, nostalgia, and cultural identity within Latinx film and streaming media, particularly as they pertain to musical cultures along the US-Mexico border. She has been awarded several grants and fellowships, including the American Musicological Society’s Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship and has worked on projects supported by the UC MEXUS Dissertation Research Grant. Her presentations have reached various national and international conferences, and she has published articles in prominent journals, including the Journal of Film Music and Latin American Music Review.
