Biography

Jacqueline Bel is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam specializing in modern Dutch literature, particularly focusing on literature from the fin de siècle, the first half of the twentieth century, both world wars, postcolonial literature, and reading promotion. In 2015, she published 'Bloed en rozen, Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur 1900-1945', which is part of the Taalunie literary history series. This book received widespread acclaim in the public domain. Her editorial work includes 'Multatuli nu. Nieuwe perspectieven op Eduard Douwes Dekker' and 'Omtrent Hugo Claus'. In 2021, she released 'De postkoloniale spiegel, De Nederlandse letteren herlezen'. Currently, she is working on a book regarding the Jewish city novel of the early twentieth century and a work focused on Multatuli. Bel has served in various literary juries and serves as vice-chair of the Multatuli Genootschap and the J.I. de Haan Genootschap. She is also on the editorial board of 'Multatuli, het jaarboek van het Multatuli Genootschap'.
