Dr. Jacqueline Smith

Biography

Jacqueline Smith is an associate professor at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Nursing and a full member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research. She has a robust research background focusing on mental health issues, particularly stigma associated with mental illness in emergency settings. Dr. Smith is also an educator and a graduate student supervisor, dedicated to fostering mental health awareness and improving the healthcare system's response to mental illness. Her work includes examining the stigma faced by Canadians with mental health issues and identifying factors affecting help-seeking behaviors among faculty members. Dr. Smith has been awarded a significant grant to explore mental illness stigma extensively, and she is involved in various committees aimed at addressing challenges in mental health care. Her research also examines the stress caregivers experience when supporting adolescents with substance use disorders and the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions. Smith's commitment to her field extends beyond academia as she actively engages in community outreach and education regarding cannabis use and harm reduction.
