Biography

Jacques-Yves Montplaisir founded the first Canadian Sleep Research Centre at the Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal in 1977. He has made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders, defining characteristics of many sleep pathologies and establishing observational diagnostic methods. He has closely collaborated with the pharmaceutical industry to develop new treatments. Montplaisir is recognized as one of the pioneers of sleep medicine, a specialty officially acknowledged in the United States. Over his career, he has continuously secured research funding, including grants from the Quebec Health Research Fund and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. His research has led to the creation of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Sleep Medicine and he has built a research team that contributes extensively to advancing knowledge in this field. He has received numerous awards including the Heinz Lehmann Prize in 1989, the Realization of the Year Award from the Association of Psychiatrists of Quebec in 1998, and the Lifetime Contribution Award from the World Sleep Federation in 2011.
