Jacques Légaré is an emeritus professor of demography at the Université de Montréal and a co-researcher at the Social Economic Dimensions Aging Population Research Program (SEDAP). He has recently served as a consultant for the Population Activities Unit of UNECE in Geneva. With a background in actuarial mathematics, he was a scholarship recipient from the Population Council in New York and the OECD in Paris during his doctoral studies in demography at the University of Paris. His academic career has been primarily based at the Université de Montréal, where he directed the Department of Demography for 16 years. Légaré has numerous publications focused on aging populations and historical demography in Quebec. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada at the age of 37 and later served as Secretary (1986–1989) and Secretary for International Relations (1990–1996). From 2004 to 2006, he was the president of the think tank Le Pont entre les Générations.
