Biography

Professor Niles obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from MIT and pursued an M.D./Ph.D. through the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, working under Professor Steve Tannenbaum. He conducted postdoctoral work in the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley in Professor Michael Marletta’s group. Niles returned to MIT in 2007 to join the Department of Biological Engineering, where his research group consists of Biological Engineers, Chemists, and Microbiologists focused on developing novel biomolecular tools to enable the study of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. As of April 2019, he was appointed director of the MIT Center for Environmental Health Sciences. His lab emphasizes the construction of tools that are multi-purpose and broadly applicable across organisms, using accessible molecular techniques to tackle challenges in the understanding of malaria biology.
