Dr. Jae Sung Chon

Biography

Jae-Sung Chon is the Chair of the Environmental Design Program at the University of Manitoba. He began his academic journey with a degree in architectural engineering from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, followed by a professional architecture degree from the University of Manitoba. His research focuses on housing urbanism, with extensive post-doctoral studies in Affordable Housing at McGill University and a Ph.D. from University College London, exploring posthuman urban conditions. Jae-Sung's work examines the intersections of housing, urban design, and collective urban form, emphasizing urban interiority and temporary structures. He has lectured internationally and has been involved in significant exhibitions such as the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. His contributions to architectural discourse include serving as executive editor for critical anthologies related to housing speculation. Over the years, Jae-Sung has received several awards, including the Winnipeg Commerce Design Award and the Canadian Architect Award of Merit. He continues to engage in innovative design practices, connecting pedagogy with urban living and environmental concerns.
