Jae Ogilvie began his academic career in Computer Engineering, but realized his calling in Forestry and transferred to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Forestry with a minor in Environmental Management at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), graduating in 2006. He continued his studies and obtained a Master of Science in Forestry in 2017. During his undergraduate studies, Jae gained practical experience working as a silvicultural surveyor at J.D. Irving, Limited and as a research assistant under Dr. Paul Arp for his Honours Thesis. His combined skills in computer science and passion for the outdoors led him to become a Research Associate and GIS Instructor at the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management in 2009. His research interests are focused on GIS-based landscape process models, particularly in the development of the Forest Watershed Research Centre's Wet Areas Mapping (WAM) model. Jae's work has significantly contributed to a provincial initiative in Alberta, developing LiDAR-based datasets widely adopted by the government and forestry/energy sectors for environmental planning and outcomes. His significant contributions have been recognized through nominations and awards, including the 2013 ASTech award for Environmental Technology & Innovation. Recently, Jae has transitioned to a senior instructor role with a primary focus on teaching while continuing to foster research relationships.
