Dr. Jahrul Alam

Biography

Jahrul Alam is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at Memorial University, cross-appointed in the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from McMaster University in 2006, where he specialized in turbulence modeling. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Alam was a SHARCNET Postdoctoral Fellow in atmospheric modeling at the University of Waterloo and served as a visiting scholar at the National Taiwan University. His research primarily focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), with significant contributions to wavelet transforms and large eddy simulations (LES) applied to turbulent flows and wind energy studies. Dr. Alam takes a leadership role in the Scientific Computing Program and serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Nonlinear Dynamics. His scholarly work involves developing innovative numerical methods for complex systems and utilizing artificial intelligence approaches to enhance turbulence modeling. Dr. Alam has guided research that led to breakthroughs in understanding interactions between atmospheric turbulence and wind energy, addressing challenges posed by climate change and environmental impacts. He has been involved with numerous research projects that integrate advanced computational techniques with practical applications, offering insights into energy systems and climate-related phenomena. Through his work, Dr. Alam aims to advance fluid dynamics knowledge and propose solutions to mitigate climate change effects.
