Biography

Jainendra Jain is the Evan Pugh University Professor and Eberly Chair at Penn State University. His research focuses on condensed matter physics, specifically on strongly correlated systems and topological phases of matter, including the fractional quantum Hall effect and exotic emergent particles. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at Stony Brook University in 1985, following a Master’s from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and a Bachelor’s from Maharaja College, Jaipur. Jain is renowned for introducing the concept of composite fermions, which has shed light on the fractional quantum Hall effect, and has contributed significantly to understanding two-dimensional electron systems in strong magnetic fields. His accolades include the Wolf Prize in Physics in 2025 and being elected as a foreign fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in 2024. He has served as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science. Jain has published extensively on topics relating to fractional quantum Hall states, superconductivity, and other areas of condensed matter physics, making groundbreaking contributions that have influenced both theoretical and experimental physics.
