Biography

Jakob Hytting's research focuses on predicting atrial fibrillation recurrence, electrical cardioversion analysis, inflammatory biomarkers, and specific gene expressions. Atrial fibrillation is a common condition that is crucial to diagnose and treat in order to reduce the risk of stroke and heart failure. The approach aims to alleviate symptoms of atrial fibrillation and restore normal heart rhythm through electrical cardioversion. However, predicting individual effectiveness and the duration of restored rhythm remains challenging, with studies indicating a recurrence rate as high as 50% within a month. This unpredictability diminishes the perceived value of cardioversion. Studies have shown links between elevated inflammation levels, specific gene expressions in blood samples, and atrial fibrillation, suggesting that high inflammatory markers and gene expressions increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. Currently, these findings are clinically applicable, but the markers studied have proven nonspecific. The research group aims to explore alternative inflammatory markers and gene expressions, hypothesizing that specific clinically relevant markers exist.
