Jaleesa Reed is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design at Cornell University. Her research broadly explores processes of self-definition, consumption, place-making, and dress practices among marginalized groups. Using a feminist theory lens and exploring Black geographies, her work examines the influence of racism and representation on Black American women’s conceptions of beauty and identity within retail spaces and urban environments. Reed's contributions to the field include a scoping review titled 'Black American Beauty Studies From 1995 to 2022' published in the Journal of Black Studies (2023) and a study on Black beauty history featured in the Clothing Textiles Research Journal (2023). She serves on the Board of Directors for the Costume Society of America. Reed holds a Ph.D. in Polymer, Fiber, and Textile Sciences with an emphasis on International Merchandising from the University of Georgia.
