Biography

James Allan studied physics and computational physics at UMIST from 1996 to 2000, graduating with first class honors. He commenced postgraduate studies in 2000, focusing on the development of the Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) and data analysis techniques in quantitative atmospheric particulate measurements. Allan completed his PhD in 2004 and has been a prominent scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS). His research centers on the measurement of atmospheric aerosols, both from natural and anthropogenic sources, and he has participated in numerous field projects across diverse environments. Allan has specialized in black carbon's effects on air quality and climate, using advanced instrumentation to analyze particulate matter. His work led to the establishment of the Manchester Air Quality Supersite in 2019. He currently holds a position at the University of Manchester and serves as the Air Pollution theme leader at NCAS, while also being a senior editor for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. His active research interests include Urban Aerosols, Secondary Organic Aerosols, and Black Carbon, utilizing cutting-edge aerosol instrumentation and methodologies for real-time analysis and modeling of atmospheric particles.
