Biography

James P. Allen is the Charles Edwin Wilbour Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at Brown University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago, joining Brown in 2007. Before his tenure at Brown, he was an epigrapher at the University of Chicago's Epigraphic Survey in Cairo and served as the Director of the American Research Center in Egypt. Additionally, he was the curator of Egyptian art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and held the position of President of the International Association of Egyptologists from 2008 to 2015. His research interests focus on ancient Egyptian grammar, literature, religion, and history, with extensive publications in these areas. Notable works include "Genesis Egypt: Philosophy Ancient Egyptian Creation Accounts" (1988), "Middle Egyptian: Introduction Language Culture Hieroglyphs" (2000, 2014), and "Ancient Egyptian Language, Historical Study" (2013). His recent projects have delved into Ancient Egyptian Phonology and Ancient Egyptian Thought, contributing significantly to the reevaluation of ancient Egyptian language models and the understanding of its verbal system.
