Biography

Lawford Anderson’s principal research interest is the evolution of Earth's crust. He is an igneous petrologist concerned with granitic magma genesis and mineral equilibria, devoting his work and students to understanding the evolution of granite magma sources and their emplacement. His research is lab-oriented and reflects shared interests across disciplines of geochemistry, structural geology, tectonics, and rock mechanics. Present research problems are diverse but follow a common theme in crustal petrology, focusing on the Proterozoic crustal evolution of North America, with an emphasis on the rapid growth of orogenic crust during the Early Proterozoic (1.7-1.9 Ga) and the Proterozoic-unique, 'anorogenic' magmatism period of 1.0 to 1.5 Ga worldwide. His research area also relates to Mesozoic and Tertiary magmatism in the western United States. Recent work has investigated the emplacement conditions and magmatic evolution of metamorphic core complexes in California, the Mt. Stuart batholith in the north Cascades, and the Tuolumne Intrusion within the Sierra Nevada batholith, California.
