Biography

Prof. Antaki’s professional career has been devoted to the development of blood-wetted medical devices. His research focuses on methodologies for devices designed for clinical use. His group pioneers physiological feedback control for implanted ventricular assist devices and has developed decision support programs aimed at identifying heart failure patients who may potentially recover with acute mechanical circulatory assistance. Over the past 24 years, Antaki has contributed to the development of heart-assist devices used clinically, including Heartmate-II, Novacor, Ventracor, TandemHeart, and Levacor. In 1997, he directed a multidisciplinary team that produced the Streamliner heart-assist device, which is the world’s first magnetically levitated rotodynamic blood pump, tested in vivo. Currently, Prof. Antaki’s research emphasizes five application areas: circulatory support systems for children, decision-support tools for severe heart failure, diagnostic technology for home point-of-care to improve patient engagement, multi-scale modeling of thrombosis in artificial circulation, and the development of medical devices for global health. His overarching project aims to accelerate medical innovation through professional networking among physicians, medical product designers, and patients. His interests and experiences are diverse but share a common theme of improving healthcare through biomedical engineering.
