Biography

James Bain is a Professor and the Associate Department Head for Academic Affairs in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He holds a B.S. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (1988) and both an M.S. (1991) and a Ph.D. (1993) in Materials Science Engineering from Stanford University. In addition to his primary role in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, he has a courtesy appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and is the Associate Director of the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC). Over his career, Bain has co-authored more than 225 papers focusing on various fields including magnetic, optical, electrical, thermal, mechanical devices, and information storage materials. His current research interests include heat-assisted magnetic recording, resistive switches, memory, and reconfigurable electronics. He is also a member of several professional societies including the Materials Research Society, IEEE Magnetics, IEEE Electron Devices, and IEEE Photonics Societies.
