Biography

James Bainbridge is a Professor of Retinal Studies at University College London and a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His research aims to improve outcomes for individuals affected by retinal diseases. He leads a research program focused on laboratory investigations into the mechanisms of retinal disease, the development of experimental models, and the preclinical development of novel therapies, including clinical trials for new medical and surgical interventions. Professor Bainbridge collaborates widely across multidisciplinary research programs to develop new molecular and cellular therapies. He trained in medicine at King's College, Cambridge, and St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, completing his specialist training in clinical ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was a Wellcome Research Training Fellow and earned his PhD in Genetics from University College London. He has held the position of Moorfields Consultant Ophthalmologist since 2004, appointed as Chair of Retinal Studies at UCL in 2011, and became an NIHR Research Professor in 2012. In 2018, he received the Champalimaud Vision Award and was elected a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences in 2020.
