Dr. James Barlow

Biography

James Barlow is the co-director of Imperial's Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance (CSEP) and a member of the Business School's Centre for Health Economics and Policy Innovation. His work primarily focuses on structural and organizational challenges that shape innovation in complex sectors of the economy. Since the early 2000s, he has significantly engaged with the healthcare sector, specifically addressing the challenges that innovators and policymakers face in embedding innovations into everyday practice to transform healthcare systems. He also possesses 10 years of experience in the housing and construction sectors, focusing on economic and institutional barriers to innovation. Barlow has been educated at the London School of Economics, holding a background in geography and economics. His previous positions include roles at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Westminster and the Policy Studies Institute. He advises and consults for government, healthcare services, industry, and companies within the medical technology, pharmaceutical, ICT, and construction sectors. Currently, he is a member of advisory boards for Deloitte's Health Innovation Observatory, Open Medical, and AGE-WELL, as well as the Industry Commons Foundation in Sweden. Barlow is also a visiting professor at the Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Learning at Halmstad University, Sweden, and recently published a book titled 'Managing Innovation in Healthcare'.
