Biography

James Bellingham is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and the Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy. He has over 30 years of experience as a global leader in the development of small, high-performance autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), resulting in systems that are widely utilized in military, industry, and scientific communities. He has been instrumental in numerous innovations in ocean observing and has led a dozen AUV expeditions in various global locations, including the Arctic and Antarctic. He joined Johns Hopkins after serving as the founding Director of the Consortium for Marine Robotics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 2014. Bellingham has held several leadership roles including at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Laboratory at MIT Sea Grant. He serves on multiple institutional and advisory boards, including the Science Robotics and the Naval Studies Board. His honors include induction into the National Academy of Engineering and the Navy Superior Public Service Award. He is the author of 'Marine Robots Shaping the Future?' and has published numerous scholarly papers. Bellingham holds a BS, MS, and PhD in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
