Dr. James Boyer

Biography

James L. Boyer is a professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine and serves as the Emeritus Director of the Yale Liver Center. He graduated from Haverford College in 1958 and obtained his MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962. Dr. Boyer has directed various sections within the Department of Medicine, including the Digestive Diseases Section and Yale's NIDDK funded Liver Center since its inception in 1984. His notable research has revolved around the basic and clinical aspects of hepatology, focusing on bile formation and cholestasis. Dr. Boyer's laboratory has contributed significantly by establishing in vivo models to study bile secretory functions and by elucidating the mechanisms of hepatic transport. His distinguished contributions have earned him several accolades, including the American Gastroenterology Association's Distinguished Achievement Award and the European Association for the Study of the Liver's International Recognition Award. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Additionally, Dr. Boyer specializes in autoimmune cholestatic liver diseases and has been involved in NIH-funded research for over three decades.
