Biography

James Brenan is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University. He received his Ph.D. in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990 and a B.Sc. in Geological Sciences (Honours) from McGill University in 1985. His research focuses on experimental studies related to the behavior of trace elements during igneous and hydrothermal processes. He leads the High Pressure Laboratory at Dalhousie, where current studies investigate the role of chromite and olivine in fractionating Re and platinum group elements within mafic igneous systems. Brenan's work further explores the diffusion of Re, Os, and Pt in sulfides and oxides, as well as the implications for the 'closure' of Re-Os and Pt-Os isotopic systems, providing insights into Earth differentiation and siderophile element geochemistry. His significant contributions have been recognized through various honors, including the Julian Boldy Award and the Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Toronto.
