James Brewer is a prominent neurologist and neuroscientist with a specific focus on human memory. He developed functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to investigate memory processes in both healthy participants and those with memory impairments. His innovative work in neuroimaging has played a significant role in the early detection of Alzheimer's disease within clinical settings and in the assessment of therapeutic drug efficacy. Brewer leads a research laboratory and directs the UCSD Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, in addition to overseeing brain imaging studies across various subjects within a multi-institutional cooperative study on Alzheimer’s disease. He completed his medical training and obtained his PhD at Stanford University, where he received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. After completing a neurology residency at Johns Hopkins University, he joined the faculty at UC San Diego in 2004, where he now holds the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosciences, as well as a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology.
