James Brewer is a neurologist and neuroscientist whose primary research interest focuses on human memory. He has developed functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods to study memory processes in healthy volunteers as well as patients with memory impairments. Dr. Brewer's work includes advanced neuroimaging techniques for early detection of Alzheimer's disease in clinical settings and measuring the efficacy of new drug developments. His research has led to the development of widely used tools for brain structure analysis, specifically for assessing brain atrophy in millions of clinical patients. In addition to directing his research laboratory, he is the director of the UCSD Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and oversees the Imaging Core of the multi-institutional Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study, managing brain imaging for enrolled subjects. Dr. Brewer earned his medical research degrees from Stanford Medical School, completed his neurology residency training at Johns Hopkins, and joined the faculty of the University of California, San Diego in 2004. He serves as the Professor Chair of the Department of Neurosciences and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology.
