Dr. James Buhler

Biography

James Buhler received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. His research interests encompass the history and theory of soundtracks, aesthetics, philosophy related to virtual instruments, and critical theory. He is the author of 'Theories of Soundtrack' published by Oxford University Press in 2019 and has co-edited several significant works, including 'Music and Cinema' (2000) and 'Voicing Cinema' (2020). He is currently engaged in the preparation of monographs such as 'Vococentric Cinema,' which examines the role of soundtracks in establishing the classical Hollywood style, and 'Theory of Virtual Instruments,' which delves into the philosophical, aesthetic, and ethical dimensions of virtual instruments, focusing particularly on sampled orchestral instruments. His recent publications reflect his diverse interests in film music and sound studies, contributing to understanding how music interacts with film narrative and production practices.
