Dr. James Burns

Biography

James Burns, MD, FACS, is a Professor and Chief of the Laryngology Division in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of voice and airway disorders. Over his 17-year tenure at Northwestern, following his time at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Burns has been a key leader in developing innovative assessment and treatment paradigms for both benign and malignant laryngeal disorders. He is a nationally recognized expert in Laryngology, serving in leadership roles within the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Laryngological Association. After completing his otolaryngology residency, he served in the United States Air Force as the medical director of the Otolaryngology service at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. His research interests include optimizing laser parameters and developing simulation models for laryngeal surgery, making him a leading authority in the use of lasers for laryngeal surgery and minimally invasive techniques for vocal fold issues. Dr. Burns is passionate about education at all levels, having directed several training programs and co-directed the laryngeal surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, significantly contributing to the next generation of physicians in his field.
