James Chanos is a Lecturer in Practice Management at the Yale School of Management. He is the founder and managing partner of Kynikos Associates, the largest exclusive short selling investment firm. Established in 1985, Kynikos provides investment management services to a diverse range of domestic and offshore clients. Chanos began his financial career as an analyst at Paine Webber, Gilford Securities, and Deutsche Bank. Throughout his investment career, he has gained recognition for identifying and selling short the shares of several well-known corporate financial disasters. He is particularly noted for his short-sale of Enron shares, which was defined by Barron's as 'the market call of the decade' over the past fifty years. Chanos’ insights were pivotal during the global financial crisis, as he alerted finance ministers to its impending approach. He serves as the chairman of the Coalition of Private Investment Companies and has testified before Congress on proposed regulations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Services Authority in the United Kingdom. Chanos was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and currently resides in New York City with his four children. He is also the president of the board of trustees at the Browning School and serves as a trustee for the Nightingale-Bamford School and the New-York Historical Society.
