Dr. James Chappel

Biography

James Chappel is the Gilhuly Family Associate Professor of History at Duke University. His research primarily explores intellectual history in modern Europe and the United States, with a particular emphasis on themes such as religion, gender, and family dynamics. Chappel has published two books and has contributed widely to both scholarly and non-scholarly publications, including esteemed outlets such as The New York Nation and Duke University's own publications. He is dedicated to enriching the experiences of undergraduates, particularly those majoring in history, and is actively involved in prison engagement initiatives. He serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies and is a co-director of the Carceral Studies Certificate at the Kenan Institute for Ethics. Chappel is also a member of the Executive Committee at the Duke Human Rights Center and has received notable fellowships to support his research endeavors.
