James M. Church, MD, is a prominent colorectal surgeon and Director of Research at Columbia University's Department of Surgery. With a distinguished career spanning over 34 years, he has significantly contributed to the field of colorectal surgery, particularly in hereditary colorectal cancers and polyposis. Originally from New Zealand, he completed medical school and postgraduate research training in general surgery at Auckland before further specializing in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Church has played a pivotal role in developing one of the finest colorectal surgery departments worldwide and has been involved in several important research initiatives, including serving as a co-investigator for the Collaborative Colorectal Cancer Family Registry. His expertise encompasses a variety of areas including colonoscopy, functional colorectal issues, and the management of hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes.
