James joined the Reid School of Music at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2017. He previously worked at the University of Sheffield, Bangor University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Nottingham. He completed his doctorate on the Fifteenth-Century English Mass Cycles and has supervised students such as Peter Wright and Philip Weller. James formerly held a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Society for Renaissance Studies. His research focuses on early music, particularly from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, and explores its representation in popular media, including television, film, and video games. He has published extensively in this field, including a monograph titled 'Cyclic Mass: Anglo-Continental Exchange in the Fifteenth Century' (Routledge, 2019), and co-edited volumes such as 'Recomposing the Past: Representations of Early Music on Stage and Screen' (Routledge, 2020) and 'History, Fantasy, Music, Sound, Image, Media' (Routledge, 2024). He is leading several externally funded research projects and has received the prestigious Tam Dalyell prize. James is also involved with the Binchois Consort as a Scholar in Residence and serves on the council of the Society for Renaissance Studies, in addition to participating in various committees.
