Biography

James Cotton is an Emeritus Professor at UNSW Canberra in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. He graduated with class honours and received the University Medal from Flinders University. His academic journey includes being a Procter Fellow at Princeton University and a scholar at the Beijing Language Institute. Cotton has held significant academic positions across various institutions including Western Australia, Newcastle, Singapore, and the Australian National University. He headed the School of Politics at the University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy, from 1993 to 1997 and was appointed Centennial Professor at the International Relations Asia Research Centre at the London School of Economics. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests focus on Australian foreign and security policy, particularly concerning North Korea and regional dynamics, alongside documenting historical Australian foreign relations from 1920 to 1936.
